For the first time since we've started our weekly artist feature, we have an artist who is not a DMV native. For those of you who frequent the blog, you might recognize her from a post I made earlier in the summer following the release of her "Laugh Now, Die Later" EP. After becoming such big fans of the EP, we decided it would be awesome to to reach out to her and have her be our Artist of the Week, as well as answer a few questions.
1. What does it mean to be the "Hoodrat Geisha"?
I actually got that from someone I followed on twitter cause he was making a joke about blasian girls. I actually liked it cause I’m lowkey obsessed with geishas and Japanese culture in general. A geisha is a traditional Japanese female entertainer. I strive to be an all around entertainer and not just a rapper. Hoodrat is just cute cause I can identify with it. I’ve had my days of running with the ratchets.
2. What's the hardest part about being an artist from Arkansas?
The hardest part is probably trying to get people to understand where Arkansas is even located. Lol Some people are really intrigued when they hear where I’m from, some just blow me off. It’s nothing hard about it though. I love where I’m from sooo much. Some may see it as a challenge, I see it as an opportunity to open more eyes to a place I love dearly.
3. Other than hip-hop, what is your favorite genre of music?
Funk/Disco. My parents are older so I’m hip to, what I refer to as, the golden age.
4. Who is your best friend?
My manager. Follow her on twitter @Fashionspitta Lol
5. Proudest moment of your career thus far?
It's a tie between performing at SXSW and getting a two page article is the Arkansas Democat-Gazette. My mom lamenated a copy and keeps it on the refrigerator. Lol
6. What artist has influenced you the most?
Missy Elliott for sure. She did her own thing in her own way and inspired me to do the same. I love her.
7. What's your current obsession?
F'real Fruit Smoothies from the Kum N' Go gas station. They are heaven on earth.
8. Name an artist that you would love to collaborate with.
Gwen Stefani. If I could get Gwen back in the game. Lordt. She’s amazing.
9. Tumblr or Twitter?
Tumblr, all day. People are more open-minded on tumblr than twitter. Follow me on tumblr, hoodratgeisha.tumblr.com
10. Do you believe social media helps or hinders an artist's success?
It could go either way. Depending on the content you post and your networking skills. If you’re posting things that can hurt your image or reputation then of course it hurts the artist. You have to be smart about what you say and the images you post cause it could go downhill quickly. Social media can be a lifesaver as well. The choice is really yours.
Be sure to listen to Kari's previous EP, "Spontaneous Generation" as well as "Laugh Now, Die Later" which has been steadily rising in popularity since its release. Also make sure you follow her on twitter and visit her site.
