For this week's edition of TYFNS Artist of the Week we have the electric, exciting 22-year old rapper from Bowie, MD, Reggie Prime. He's been featured on TYFNS earlier in 2014 along with his Runnin' Rebels group members Paradox and Buck Norris. His most recent project Cerebral Cathedral II dropped earlier this year and featured a wide array of material, with something for everybody on the tape. This summer he's been prepping his new project Her that will be releasing sometime in the near future but we were able to catch up with him for some slight Q&A. Enjoy...
1. Who is your favorite singer?
Past is Michael Jackson... hands down. Present day would have to be John Legend
2. If I was to turn on your iPod right now, what five artists/songs would I see in your recently played?
You'd see Buck Norris and Paradox in there heavy. Curren$y, J.Cole, and old Jay-Z. Seen it All by Jeezy would definitely be the most played song right now though.
3. If you could go open up for any artist on tour who would it be?
Wiz Khalifa or Big Sean.
4. What's your favorite thing to do other than rap?
Basketball wins by default.
5. Are you still learning who you are?
Definitely. Not only am I still learning about who I am as an artist, I'm still developing as an individual and all of that plays a part in defining yourself.
6. You ever get nervous?
Rarely. Common question though...I freestyle enough around people I don't know for me to be nervous, especially when we're talking about me doing songs that I wrote. Nervous for what? I'm just gettin you hip...
7. What's the inspiration behind your lyrics?
Life. I want facts in my bars, simple and plain. People want to hear you rap about things that are relateable but things that they've never done. No two Individuals stories are the same so I just keep it a 100 while telling my story(ies) while telling them in ways they've never been told.
8. What inspires you?
Being told that I can't. That's the biggest push/inspiration I have. My own father told me a few years back that, "You can't rap...you're not a hoodlum or a thug..." Yes he's still in my life, and yes our relationship is great but after that statement he fits in the category with all other doubters and naysayers. Fuck it, prove em wrong.
9. What's the hardest part about being Reggie?
Keeping all the people I care about happy. I'm a very charismatic, people person so I tend to get along well with pretty much everybody. Keeping everybody that means something to me happy is impossible and even though I know that it's hard to accept. That's just the kinda nigga I am I guess.
10. What's your favorite musical memory?
Right before I went on stage in Durham, NC to perform I was introduced to DJ Kool aka Mr "Let Me Clear My Throat." He had just turned up on stage lowkey. Upon approaching the stage I sapped him up and introduced myself only to hear him say, "I know who you are, I heard the Cathedral. You're headed in the right direction keep it up." I doubt I'll ever forget it. He's a legend....and that's motivation.
