Earlier this year TYFNS released it’s list of the top 5 rappers that were poised to have a big 2014. Now we take a look back and evaluate exactly how big the year was for the artist we named.
5. Schoolboy Q
Q had big year, with the release of his debut album and the overall presence of Top Dawg this year, Schoolboy can look back at 2014 with a smile. The first half of the year was definitely bigger then the last half, but Q walked into the Hip-Hop limelight with what we’ll call a pretty successful year. We hope Q continues on his rise and takes his bucket hat, Hoover LA flow to new heights in 2015.
Future started off the year strong, new album, new fiancé, new child, but the as year continued on he fizzled out a little. Future had been going strong for about two years so one can assume it was time for a slow down. He still managed to have a good year though, releasing two “ok” projects, a studio album and his latest mixtape “Monster.” Future stayed in the news with the birth of his son and spilt from his fiancé, singer Ciara. But he stayed relevant musically, which is most important, popping up on features in typical Future style. With so many artist coming out the ATL daily Future's shine was dimed this year, and we have to wonder how much of it was him stepping back or other artist taking the spotlight. Either way it wasn’t as big of a year some expected for Future, but still a very good one.
3. Rick Ross
Rozay had a huge year in 2014. Between two album releases, new MMG signings, and pears Ross’s 2014 was nice. Ross might have got skinny but that didn’t take away from the big success 2014 was for him all around. The MMG boss oversaw the label grow, lent out many features, and stayed in the Rap spotlight with major projects. Mastermind, which in my opinion was the better of the two releases, proved to be a success and Hood Billionaire looks to be a nice little addition. It's going to be hard for the Boss to mirror his success from 2014 in the new year, but there is no doubt he looks to continue well into 2015 and beyond. Hopefully the MMG head honcho stays strong.
Drake has had anything but a quiet year. If he isn’t in the news for music he’s in the news for stealing your girl. Even though he didn’t have an official project drop he’s always dropping hot tracks, and verses on features. Drake also made OVO’s imprint on the game strong by signing two new artist this year, PartyNextDoor and ILoveMakonnen, working closely with them to get their music popping. Drake announced the title of his upcoming album, “Views From The 6,” and confirmed it will be released in 2015. So look for next year to be even bigger for Drizzy.
1. Kendrick Lamar
K Dot had a rather quiet first half of 2k14, but he quickly upped the slack in the second half of the year. Kendrick stayed on features throughout the year then dropped his first single in along time entitled “i,” which received mixed reaction, but people were talking. He has flown under the radar in 2014, but he just signed a deal with Reebok and confirmed a new album in 2015 just as Drake has. Kendrick watched as other Top Dawg artist got their shine in 2014 as he used this year to plan for the future. So 2015 looks to be the year Kendrick shows us what he was doing all 2014.
Bonus- Kanye West
What’s rap without Kanye? 2014 was a rather quiet year for Yeezy, outside of Kim and his daughter. He didn’t release individual music, although he did produce a lot of projects for other artist. He continued to grow G.O.O.D. Music behind closed doors and he too confirmed a 2015 release date for new music. There are rumors that his album is already completed. 2014 may not have been as big for West in some people’s eyes because there is no solo project we can attach his name too, but he definitely still made noise in front and behind the scenes, whether it be musically or not. So 2015 is where we will see if all the hard work of 2014 pays off for West.
